CAMAS, Wash. -- A father is in jail and his son is in the hospital after a shooting in Camas Thursday night.
Police said Thomas "J" Reiter, 70, allegedly shot his 43-year-old son, also named Thomas. The younger man should recover from the wounds, officials said. He's being treated at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.
The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m.
Police are still sorting out what happened but say the shooting happened apparently over a fight for money. The elder Reiter said it was self-defense.
He shuffled into a Clark County courtroom Friday with a bruised face. Detectives said Reiter told them he was drinking and smoking pot with friends when his son came in yelling and demanding money.
The father told police his son threw him out of his chair, onto the ground and started punching him in the face. He was able to grab his gun, pointed it at his son and said his son told him to go ahead and shoot. Then came toward him. So he fired the gun.
But his son told police a slightly different version. He said his father punched first.
The elder Reiter is charged with second-degree assault.
